How lottery odds are calculated: Powerball, EuroMillions, and TOTO
Lottery jackpot odds are not a marketing slogan. They are a count of every valid ticket the rules allow, then "1 in that number."
For US Powerball, that count is 292,201,338. For EuroMillions, 139,838,160. For Singapore TOTO, 13,983,816. Those figures come from the same idea: combinations. Once you can compute one game, you can compute the rest.
This guide shows the formula, works three real formats step by step, then explains how lower prize tiers and "any prize" odds are derived. If you only care whether patterns change the odds, read lottery odds explained instead. This one is the calculator.
What "odds of 1 in X" actually means
For a fair draw, every valid ticket is equally likely. Jackpot odds of 1 in X means:
- There are X distinct tickets that could win the top prize
- Your single ticket is one of them
- Probability of jackpot = 1 / X
X is not vibes. It is the size of the rule set: how many numbers you pick, from how large a pool, whether order matters, and whether a second drum (Powerball, Lucky Stars, Mega Ball) multiplies the total.
The combination formula (order does not matter)
Most lotteries care about which numbers you match, not the order the balls came out. That is a combination, written C(n, k) or n choose k:
C(n, k) = n! / (k! × (n − k)!)
In plain language: ways to choose k distinct numbers from a pool of n, when shuffling those k numbers does not create a new ticket.
Tiny example: pick 2 numbers from 1–4.
- Ordered pairs: 12 ways (1-2 and 2-1 both count)
- Combinations: C(4, 2) = 6 (only 2, 3, 4, 3, 4, 4)
Lottery tickets usually match the combination count, not the ordered count. If you multiply 49 × 48 × 47 × 46 × 45 × 44 and stop, you overcount TOTO by a factor of 6! = 720.
Worked example 1: Singapore TOTO (6 from 49)
Format: choose 6 unique numbers from 1–49. Order does not matter. Jackpot (Group 1) requires all 6.
C(49, 6) = 49! / (6! × 43!)
= (49 × 48 × 47 × 46 × 45 × 44) / (6 × 5 × 4 × 3 × 2 × 1)
= 10,068,347,520 / 720
= 13,983,816
Jackpot odds: 1 in 13,983,816 per ordinary board.

TOTO also draws an additional number used for Groups 2, 4, and 6. That does not change the Group 1 denominator. Group 1 still needs exactly the six winning main numbers. The extra ball only creates more ways to hit mid-tier prizes (and more ways to miss Group 1 while matching five).

Worked example 2: US Powerball (5 from 69 + Powerball 1–26)
Powerball is two independent draws multiplied together.
White balls: 5 from 69, order irrelevant:
C(69, 5) = (69 × 68 × 67 × 66 × 65) / (5 × 4 × 3 × 2 × 1)
= 11,238,513
Red Powerball: 1 from 26 → 26 outcomes.
Jackpot combinations:
11,238,513 × 26 = 292,201,338
Jackpot odds: 1 in 292,201,338.
You need both pools correct. Matching all five white balls without the Powerball is still rare (about 1 in 11.7 million) but far easier than the jackpot, which is why that tier exists as a fixed $1,000,000 prize in the standard table.

Why two drums? Separating the Powerball keeps jackpot odds enormous while leaving a cheap "match the red ball only" tier with odds around 1 in 38. One big pool of ~292 million without tiers would feel hopeless and pay out almost never at the bottom. The matrix is a product design choice, not a conspiracy against your birthday set.
Worked example 3: EuroMillions (5 from 50 + 2 Lucky Stars from 12)
Same structure as Powerball: main pool × star pool.
Main numbers:
C(50, 5) = 2,118,760
Lucky Stars: 2 from 1–12, order irrelevant:
C(12, 2) = 66
Jackpot combinations:
2,118,760 × 66 = 139,838,160
Jackpot odds: 1 in 139,838,160.
EuroJackpot uses the same 5/50 + 2/12 matrix, so its jackpot denominator matches. Prize tables and caps differ by operator, not by the combination count.

TOTO looks "easier" because the pool is smaller and there is no second drum. "Easier" still means roughly one jackpot ticket out of fourteen million. Ticket price, prize sharing, and tax rules decide whether that relative ease matters for you. The combination math alone does not.
For a 4-digit game like Singapore 4D, there is no C(n, k) at all for an exact match: every ticket is one of 10,000 four-digit strings (0000–9999). Exact-match odds are 1 in 10,000 per prize category that pays on that exact number. "Any prize" is better because many winning numbers are drawn per draw. How lower-tier odds are calculated
Jackpot math is the easy headline. Mid tiers count the ways to match exactly the required mains (and bonus / star / Powerball state) and divide by the same total ticket space.
Sketch for a 6-from-49 game, "match exactly 3 mains" (no bonus complications):
- Choose which 3 of your 6 ticket numbers are the winning ones: C(6, 3)
- Choose 3 losing numbers from the 43 non-drawn mains: C(43, 3)
- Divide by C(49, 6)
Operators publish the cleaned-up denominators. When you build a spreadsheet, remember:
- Exactly k matches ≠ at least k matches
- Bonus / additional / Powerball / stars add a second condition that multiplies or partitions the count
- Prize tiers are mutually exclusive in official tables; "any prize" is the union, not the sum of jackpot + second + third if those events overlap (they do not in a well-designed tier table, but you still compute the union carefully)

Buying more tickets: what actually scales
If one ticket has probability p of jackpot, n distinct tickets in one draw have probability:
1 − (1 − p)^n
For tiny p and modest n, that is almost n × p. Ten Powerball tickets are not "10× luck." They are roughly ten chances out of 292 million, still about 1 in 29.2 million if the lines do not collide.
They also cost 10×. Expected value is a different question from probability. Most state lotteries return far less than $1 of prizes per $1 wagered once you average jackpot sharing and taxes. Odds math tells you frequency. It does not promise positive EV.
What this math does not say
- It does not say Quick Pick beats self-pick. Same format, same denominator. See Quick Pick vs choosing your own numbers.
- It does not say hot/cold charts change C(n, k). Past draws do not remove combinations from the next draw.
- It does not certify that a third-party "prediction" model found a smaller X. If X shrank, the operator's prize fund would break.
How to use these numbers in practice
- Read the format on the ticket or operator site (k from n, plus bonus rules).
- Compute or look up jackpot X.
- Check any-prize odds and typical prize amounts, not only the headline jackpot.
- Decide whether the entertainment budget is worth that X.

FAQ
How do you calculate lottery odds step by step?
Identify the main pool size n and how many numbers k you must match. Compute C(n, k). If there is a second drum (Powerball, Lucky Stars), multiply by that drum's combination count. Jackpot odds are 1 in that product.
Why is Powerball harder to win than TOTO?
Powerball multiplies a large white-ball combination count by 26 Powerball outcomes. TOTO is a single C(49, 6) with no second multiplier. 292 million is larger than 14 million, so one Powerball ticket is the longer shot.
Do system entries or multiple boards change the formula?
They change how many tickets you hold, not the odds per ticket. A system entry that expands into 28 boards is 28 chances (with dependence if boards share structure), billed as 28 tickets. Per-board jackpot odds stay 1 in X.
